Street Muse gets the lowdown on the woman behind The Clothes Horse.
Name…Rebecca, or The Clothes Horse
Age…22
Hometown… I don’t have one! I made my first move when I was 6 months old and I’ve been moving every few years since then, there isn’t even a place I have lived the longest! Right now, I’m in Washington State.
Occupation…Student. I graduated from college in May and I’m applying to law schools now, in the year between I have been freelance writing online and publishing my blog.
How did you get into blogging?
I don’t know what the first blog I read was, but I suddenly discovered street fashion blogs like Hel-looks, The Sartorialist, and Facehunter. From there, I found personal fashion blogs, which I became really inspired by. Here were real people publishing snippets from their life and they were so eloquent with words and images.
Then, one summer when I returned from a semester in Japan to college in rural Pennsylvania it wasn’t enough to admire bloggers from a distance, I wanted to connect with them. I needed an outlet and a form of escapism from my less-than-thrilling surroundings and my blog became that.
Why do you think blogging is so popular?
It’s a very convenient medium to follow: I turn on my computer and browse dozens of beautiful sites for free. Also, the people writing them are what others tune in for. Creative spirits who previously would have only been known in their small communities can now reach a larger community online and shy, recluses have found a safe outlet online. People’s lives are interesting and everyone has a unique perspective; they make blogs really personable.

Favourite blogs/websites?
Calivintage, Chictopia, The Cherry Blossom Girl, nearly any website listed on my blog can be counted as a “favorite.” I admire a lot of blogs and for a lot of different reasons.
What do you like most about fashion?
I like to think in terms of style, it’s less limiting than the term ‘fashion.’ But ultimately, I love the self-expression. Isn’t that so much of what art is: showing others how you see the world? Fashion or style is the same, it’s the way you see the world and maybe a little of how you would like the world to see you.
Favourite places to visit in the world?
Osaka Japan is an epic city. I also had an amazing time in Budapest, Hungary. Oh! And I love Hawaii, but I’ve found I like places the best that I visit with people who make an impact on me and make every experience better.
How would you describe your style?
I have a hard time describing my style, because I’m not entirely intentional about it, you know? When forced I think most of my looks are “quirky ladylike.” There’s a sense of pulled-togetherness in them (that I do not feel as if I possess in real life), but a lot of personal, whimsical touches like tiaras, feather fascinators, etc.
Favourite designers…
Christian Lacroix, Rodarte, and lately Proenza Schouler.
Favourite models…
I really, really like Gemma Ward, but now she has retired. Devon Aoki and Sasha Pivovara are other favorites; I love that Sasha producing these gorgeous painting and Devon is such a unique face that has really made it in the industry.
How do you stay fit and healthy?
Oh dear, I’m not too good at either of those. My family is extremely healthy and they are beginning to rub off on me! I like to snack on fruit rather than sweets or chips, and I’m beginning to go to the gym a few days a week. Mostly I think just have a balanced diet and walking a lot will do wonders for your health.

What are some of your favourite things?
My mother’s dog Gus. Martin Eden by Jack London. Seashells. White chocolate.
What are you inspired by?
Everything; occasionally it is an editorial or a runway collection, but more often it’s just a mood or some obscure reference to an artist or piece of art. Many days it’s hard to even pinpoint inspiration to one clear, defined source; there’s just a sense of what you want to do/wear/see that day and you don’t know why.
What are you listening to at the moment?
Home by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros
When are you happiest?
When I fall asleep quickly at night remembering all the events of the day and my limbs feeling heavy and weary…
(Complete this sentence) Style is…an evolution.
