The Sydney Lady

March 6th, 2010

Lara Bingle - Sydney Lady

Sydney women would have to typify the quintessential modern-day Australian woman. Beautiful, intelligent, healthy, stylish and ambitious – these women rule this city.

I’m not saying other women in Australian capitals aren’t any of these qualities, quite the contrary; it’s just in Sydney these women come out in force. You see them running through tourist-strewn streets on their lunch breaks, walking through marbled foyers in sky-high heels, dressed-to-the-nines in a mix of high street and designer ensembles and casually looking editorial-perfect even when they’re rushing to catch their peak-hour train home.

In no other city have I seen more daringly tall, blonde Amazonian types, either they’re off-duty models or there’s something in the water. Incredibly intimidating it may be, but at the moment, there is no other place I’d rather be, than gazing out at the glorious waters of this beautiful city – beautiful in more ways than one.

The Cat’s Meow

March 4th, 2010

Photo courtesy of The Cat's Miu

An enviable wardrobe, pixie face and trendsetter tastes has made Alice Kim’s online domain, one of the coolest places to be. The Cat’s Miu is her foray into the popular fashion blogosphere – updating us with her candidly hip purchases and thoughts on what’s happening fashion-wise.

Name… Alice Kim

Age…19

Hometown… Toronto, Canada

Occupation…Full-time university fashion student, part-time SA in retail

I started blogging…on Xanga about 5 years ago, where I had an online journal and talked about what I did every day. I then started to become more interested in fashion as I grew older and began reading other blogs. I soon left Xanga for Blogger after I realized that I was reading a lot of blogs that were hosted by Blogger and started my own fashion blog from there!

Blogging is popular because… it’s so convenient and easy. You can do it anytime, anywhere and post whatever you want! Get ready for the cliché but obviously today’s technology has a huge part in why blogging is popular.

Fashion is… so fun and creative!! Ha, I’m sure everyone says that. What I like about fashion is that it makes me feel really happy, so happy to the point where I get unnecessarily excited when I see my favorite runway looks in the flesh at department stores like Holt Renfrew. Of course when I want to express my excitement with the friend I’m with, they don’t understand and just think I’m a loser for going crazy over a pair of Ann Demeulemeester lace-up heels or seeing the Balenciaga Spring 08 floral dresses in real life. Anyway…

Places I love… New York, California (San Francisco to L.A. and everything in between), Seoul, Tokyo… Haven’t visited Europe yet but I’m sure European cities will be added to this list in the future.

My style is… I’m not gonna lie, I am not a fan of this question. My style depends on my mood… I’m practical and laid-back but also trendy? I hate that word.

Favourite designers… Tisci, Theyskens (so sad about his departure..), Phoebe Philo, Ann Demeulemeester, the Mulleavys, Ghesquiere, Hanah MacGibbon… and so many more!

Favourite models…Oh damn, also so many favorites… Sasha Pivovarova, Freja Beha, Lara Stone, Georgia May Jagger (does she count as a legit model??), Irina Lazareaunu…

My way to stay fit is… I try to run every other day with my dad and dog and do other cardio and stretching exercises.

Some of my fave things include… I love my DSLR and stack of Vogue Korea/Nippon/China magazines but I wouldn’t consider them to be my FAVOURITE things…

My inspiration comes from… everything! I realised that I’m very inspired by photos of nature and explosions and stuff (like on Tumblr) and illustrations.

Check out Alice’s blog here.

Two Bucks “Wandering” Sale

February 21st, 2010

Soon Be Wandering Sale

Clusters of well-styled ladies, racks of affordable fashion and one major line of vintage-hungry guys and girls only precipitates one event — a Two Bucks til’ Wednesday sale.

The new city location in the Perth Cultural Centre was a welcome change giving those who wanted something to see and do beforehand plenty of options.

The hot weather didn’t deter and everyone again was out in force for what has become not only an event to score some cheap and stylish digs but a parade of the oh-so hip of Perth’s flourishing style scene.

P.S. On a sadder note, this will be the last post from Perth in a while. I’m moving to Sydney indefinitely, and will be updating Street Muse with posts this time my new hometown. I hope you guys will still find Street Muse both entertaining and interesting, even if it is a little geographically challenged! With love, Dani.

All her accessories do the work here. They make the outfit pop, making it really interesting and quirky.

Black lace always looks very classy, especially when done right with the essential black undergarments.

What a beautiful group of stylish girls — each honing their own individual style.

The very stylish Hannah from the Two Bucks team putting some final touches in place before the sale begins.

The beautiful Sophia from Two Bucks.

And the sale begins!

This girl caught my eye out of everyone standing in the line, because of her extremely pale, blonde hair contrasted with her bright, green/blue print dress. Amazing.

Simple, classic colours always look great — they never go out of style and you always look flawlessly put-together.

Relaxing before the sale begins. The shade was seriously divine — such a hot day!

A simple, comfy outfit made fun with the white love-heart shaped sunglasses.

BU knows Best!

February 5th, 2010

The standard uniform for the fashionably fashionable is generally black. Colour it seems is a no-go zone, and one the uninitiated gladly explores.

It’s then very refreshing to see models not only explore their own individual style, but who lavish in wearing colour!

Annabu is one such creature. At 22, she’s not only incredibly beautiful with her piercing green eyes enhanced by her jet black hair, she has an innate sense of what looks good, and she doesn’t play it safe — give her prints, lots of accessories and bold colours any day.

Street Muse talks to the bubbly model about what it’s like being both a model and a blogger.

Photo http://justbuit.blogspot.com/

I started modelling when… I was 17 or 18, then finished school and started to really work when I was 19.

What I like most about modelling is…travelling to the greatest cities and meeting lovely people.

I got into blogging…when I started on chictopia, but I also wanted to share some of my art and photography, so I started my own blog.

On a modelling assignment!

Blogging is so popular because… it’s fashion from real people! We’re our own stylists and isn’t a real person a better inspiration than an ad in a magazine anyway?

Favourite sites…adeline rapon, fashiontoast and fashionnerdic

The thing I like most about fashion is…it’s a great way for people to express themselves.

The places I love to visit include London, Barcelona and I would really like to see NYC, Singapore and Tokyo.

Photo http://justbuit.blogspot.com/

My style is…colourful, vintage and comfy!

My favourite fashion designers are Gareth Pugh, Alex McQueen, Alexander Wang, Margiela and Viktor + Rolf.

My favourite model is… Sasha Pivovarova.

I’m inspired by… art, magazines and other bloggers.

I’m happiest… when I can do my art or when I find a great vintage piece.

Back to Bondi

February 5th, 2010

Hey everyone, sorry if I’ve been a little slow with updating recently but I do have a good excuse! I’m planning the move from West to East, to the sunny shores and bright lights of Sydney.

In the stress of planning I haven’t been able to get out as much, so over the next few weeks, in between the last lovely shots of Perth, I will be putting more of an emphasis on profiling talented people — including popular fashion bloggers, models and stylish connoisseurs.

I won’t forget Perth though, and I’II have someone photographing here in Perth whilst I explore the east!

I hope everyone is having great holidays!!!

Blogger Spotlight: Karla’s Closet

January 28th, 2010

“It’s very feminine at times, but I love to wear men’s clothing. There’s something so sexy about it,” explains 20-year-old Karla Deras.

Unlike other’s her age, Karla has her own unique take on fashion, an ingredient which has seen her hugely popular blog, Karla’s Closet go from hobby to influential fashion read.

The Californian student has been blogging consistently since she started back in April 2008, with regular commentary on fashion trends, what she’s wearing and her latest buys.

Like many other fashion bloggers, Karla started her own blog because of her obsession with blogging heavyweights, Style Bubble and The Sartorialist.

[Fashion blogs] have become so popular because they’re able to present inspiration and information to readers much quicker than magazines,” she says.

Courtesy of Karla's Closet

She lists Style Like U, Emma Veronica Johansson, Street Peeper and everyone’s favourite street style photographer, The Sartorialist as some of her favourite blogs, with Miuccia Prada and Yves Saint Laurent as two of her favourite designers.

When she’s not dressing to the nines in elegant apparel, Karla loves collecting sunglasses, laughing, making dinner for her dog and strawberry mango smoothies from Urth Cafe.

For Karla, style means more than fading fashion trends, style is “…all about self-confidence.”

Dancing in the Sun

January 28th, 2010

http://zanitazanita.blogspot.com

It’s a sad summer when you’ve been devoid of the heart-achingly good times of a music festival! So it is again with this year’s Big Day Out, as I’ve missed out on tickets.

Attendance to music festivals has had a bit of a resurgence of late, but it hasn’t just been the work of big-name musicians. It’s the uniquely hipnotic atmosphere of the festivals themselves, with their parades of beautiful people, loud music, characters and the wealth of memories they always leave behind.

If you’re heading out to Big Day Out this Sunday, have heaps of fun and we may see you there!

Blog Spotlight: The Clothes Horse

January 27th, 2010

She’s the cute-as-pie fashionista whose self-styled photos under the pseudonym, The Clothes Horse have gained her a worldwide following.

Her innate sense of what looks good coupled with an undeniable ladylike charm has made this inspired blogger one of the irresistible style icons to watch in the digital era.

Rebecca aka The Clothes Horse not only delivers beautifully put-together outfits, she’s a fascinating photographer, writer and storyteller, weaving the details of her enchanting day-to-day adventures into whimsical stories.

Street Muse gets the lowdown on the woman behind The Clothes Horse.

Name…Rebecca, or The Clothes Horse

Age…22

Hometown… I don’t have one! I made my first move when I was 6 months old and I’ve been moving every few years since then, there isn’t even a place I have lived the longest! Right now, I’m in Washington State.

Occupation…Student. I graduated from college in May and I’m applying to law schools now, in the year between I have been freelance writing online and publishing my blog.

How did you get into blogging?
I don’t know what the first blog I read was, but I suddenly discovered street fashion blogs like Hel-looks, The Sartorialist, and Facehunter. From there, I found personal fashion blogs, which I became really inspired by. Here were real people publishing snippets from their life and they were so eloquent with words and images.

Then, one summer when I returned from a semester in Japan to college in rural Pennsylvania it wasn’t enough to admire bloggers from a distance, I wanted to connect with them. I needed an outlet and a form of escapism from my less-than-thrilling surroundings and my blog became that.

Why do you think blogging is so popular?
It’s a very convenient medium to follow: I turn on my computer and browse dozens of beautiful sites for free. Also, the people writing them are what others tune in for. Creative spirits who previously would have only been known in their small communities can now reach a larger community online and shy, recluses have found a safe outlet online. People’s lives are interesting and everyone has a unique perspective; they make blogs really personable.

Courtesy of The Clothes Horse

Favourite blogs/websites?
Calivintage, Chictopia, The Cherry Blossom Girl, nearly any website listed on my blog can be counted as a “favorite.” I admire a lot of blogs and for a lot of different reasons.

What do you like most about fashion?
I like to think in terms of style, it’s less limiting than the term ‘fashion.’ But ultimately, I love the self-expression. Isn’t that so much of what art is: showing others how you see the world? Fashion or style is the same, it’s the way you see the world and maybe a little of how you would like the world to see you.

Favourite places to visit in the world?
Osaka Japan is an epic city. I also had an amazing time in Budapest, Hungary. Oh! And I love Hawaii, but I’ve found I like places the best that I visit with people who make an impact on me and make every experience better.

How would you describe your style?
I have a hard time describing my style, because I’m not entirely intentional about it, you know? When forced I think most of my looks are “quirky ladylike.” There’s a sense of pulled-togetherness in them (that I do not feel as if I possess in real life), but a lot of personal, whimsical touches like tiaras, feather fascinators, etc.

Favourite designers…
Christian Lacroix, Rodarte, and lately Proenza Schouler.

Favourite models…
I really, really like Gemma Ward, but now she has retired. Devon Aoki and Sasha Pivovara are other favorites; I love that Sasha producing these gorgeous painting and Devon is such a unique face that has really made it in the industry.

How do you stay fit and healthy?
Oh dear, I’m not too good at either of those. My family is extremely healthy and they are beginning to rub off on me! I like to snack on fruit rather than sweets or chips, and I’m beginning to go to the gym a few days a week. Mostly I think just have a balanced diet and walking a lot will do wonders for your health.

Courtesy of The Clothes Horse

What are some of your favourite things?
My mother’s dog Gus. Martin Eden by Jack London. Seashells. White chocolate.

What are you inspired by?
Everything; occasionally it is an editorial or a runway collection, but more often it’s just a mood or some obscure reference to an artist or piece of art. Many days it’s hard to even pinpoint inspiration to one clear, defined source; there’s just a sense of what you want to do/wear/see that day and you don’t know why.

What are you listening to at the moment?
Home by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros

When are you happiest?
When I fall asleep quickly at night remembering all the events of the day and my limbs feeling heavy and weary…

(Complete this sentence) Style is…an evolution.

Street Muse Blogger Series

January 26th, 2010

The proliferation of online personalities through blogs has really expanded over the past few years, with more and more people jumping on the bandwagon.

Blogging is the absolute perfect way of sharing your thoughts, opinions, images and interests with people from Sydney to Sicily. Here at Street Muse we’re a massive fan of traversing the World Wide Web and exploring other people’s lifestyles and cultures through blogs.

Some of our favourite blogs are of course, ones that feature the very interesting, individual style of fashionable men and women, their fashion news, interests and street fashion photographs.

Over the next few weeks, we will be bringing you the stories behind some of the talented people who take the time to entertain us with their words and photos. I hope you enjoy, and as always if you have a great idea for Street Muse, let us know!
